Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon Napa County Wine Review

From the bottle:

Napa County native & winemaker Tony Coltrin brings more than 45 years of winemaking experience to Oberon. Tony makes this Cabernet Sauvignon from an exceptional blend of Napa County grapes selected for their concentration of ripe fruit flavors and silky, supple tannins. Lush, lingering black cherry, dark berry and cassis flavors are complimented by warm spicy notes of toasted oak.

Oberon Bottle Label

I tasted the 2021 vintage of Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon Napa County.

Appearance

Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon Appearance

Upon pouring, this wine exhibited a rich ruby-red color in the glass. Complimenting that was a garnet to purple meniscus, giving this wine a lovely look.

When I gave this wine a tip and spin it really really coated up the glass and abundant, slow-falling legs soon formed.

Aroma

Pretty much as soon as I poured this wine I noticed its pronounced aroma. Even a foot away from the glass it’s noticeable, especially when first poured (or after a fresh pour).

On the nose, it was rich and vibrant.

I picked up whiffs of red fruits, plus rich nutmeg-like spices to a lesser note.

I noted only the slightest whiff of alcohol in the wine’s aroma, which I appreciated.

Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon alcohol content 13.7% by volume, per the bottle.

Taste

When I tasted this wine, the first thing I noticed was its warm cherry flavors.

Following that, I also picked up just a tiny bit of coffee and toasty oak.

A fresh pour and tasting revealed a darker and slightly sweeter concord grape flavor.

Though it quickly reverted to the warm cherry flavors once it got a bit of air.

I enjoyed the wine’s flavor and found it to be on par with most Cabernet Sauvignon wines I’ve had.

Mouthfeel and Tannins

I would describe the wine’s mouthfeel as linen-like.

It’s definitely a dry Cabernet and my intuition was that the wine was either 100% Cabernet Sauvignon or contained very little else in its blend.

Other tasting notes I’ve read of this vintage claim this wine blends in some Merlot, Zinfandel, and Syrah with the Cabernet.

Those other varietals tend to result in a richer, almost sweeter, tasting wine.

While it’s possible those varietals have been blended in, I didn’t pick that up. To me, the experience felt like 100% Cabernet only.

Moving on to the tannins, the bottle label called for them to be silky and supple.

However, to me they were not like that.

I found the tannins to be fine-grained, though well-integrated and not overwhelming, which was good.

Finish

With a good long sip that fully coated my palate, I found the wine to be quite long finishing.

Its tannins and its flavors were equally noticeable and balanced in the finish.

The tannins settled in the nooks and crannies of my mouth while the mouth-coating flavor held its own on my palate.

Overall Opinion of Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon Napa County

Overall, I enjoyed this wine though some might find it a bit pricey.

Its strengths included it’s robust and enjoyable aroma along with its well-balanced tannins.

Plus, I could tell it was a well-structured wine.

I feel it did lack a bit of complexity, though, in that I found the flavors to be mostly one-dimensional.

I was really looking for all the flavors mentioned on the bottle label, but didn’t find all of them when I tasted the wine.

While I wouldn’t call this one a strong sipper on its own, I do think it would pair nicely with the right foods.

Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon Napa County price $25.99 and I picked it up at my local wine store.

Suggested Food Pairing

I would suggest pairing this wine with roasted or grilled red meat dishes.

It will balance out the richness of a grilled steak or roast nicely.
